Originally known as Bear’s Mill, this is one of the earliest mill sites in Lancaster County, built by Jacob Bear in 1717. The village around the mill was called “Catfish” until 1846 when a post office opened in the village and it was renamed “Oregon” after the newly settled Oregon territories.
A fire destroyed the mill in 1909 but it was rebuilt. Milling continued until James Bittner closed operations in 1943. The Church of the Brethren has owned the property since 1989, and are using it for offices.
