Shock’s Mills

Aka Rowenna Mill

There is some difference of opinion about the first builder of this mill. One source says the first mill was built by Matthew Henderson c1727. Another source claims it was built by John Grove prior to the Revolution. A third source says Abram Hess built the mill in 1730 and a fourth says Abram Hess built it in 1748. Also, there were two mills shown on the 1824 map, the 1842 map, and the 1875 Atlas. Perhaps that is the cause of some of the confusion.

Abram Schock was the owner in 1899. His name is preserved in the nearby Schock’s Mill railroad bridge across the Susquehanna. Rowenna was once the name of the post office in this area.

The mill is located at 23 Railroad Avenue, Marietta, PA and has been renovated into apartments.
